Formula 1 World Championship

Eleven teams, twenty three rounds, and an order that changes on a wet Saturday, a two stop that becomes a one, a tenth found on the entry to the last corner. This is the record of it, kept as it happens.

The weekend

Four stages, run in this order. By the time the lights go out, most of the answer is already written.

  1. Practice

Hours to find a set-up window and learn what the tyre will take.

  2. Qualifying

Three segments, the slowest knocked out each time, one lap that counts.

  3. Grid

Penalties applied, tyres chosen, the order locked under parc ferme.

  4. Race

About 305 kilometres, and the only session that pays points.

Constructors

The championship that pays for next year. Both cars score, so a quiet second driver costs more than it looks.
